Mediawiki and WordPress have some similarities, however, are completely different in most of the aspects. Both are open-source web-based platforms that allow people to contribute some kind of content (typically articles) to a website.
The basic difference to keep in mind is that WordPress is a closed system where only certain people can add and edit information. Mediawiki, in contrast, is an open system where anyone is allowed to add content, which is strictly structured and controlled. What is more, Mediawiki is generally focused on informative and encyclopedia-oriented type of content while WordPress allows adding everything from the usual content to highly interactive media.
